Children form their sense of worthiness and self-esteem before they have words

A child's sense of who they are, whether they matter, whether they're loved and wanted, isn't built from what we tell them.

It forms in the first 1,000 days, through pregnancy, birth and those first years, in the part of the brain that's wired before language. It's built from how they were held, what was happening around them, and what their nervous system learned about whether they're welcome here.

This is called the implicit self: the felt sense of who we are that lives in the body, below conscious memory, shaping how we see ourselves long before we can put it into words.

And birth is one of its very first lessons.

So how do you reach a part of your child that formed before words?

Storytelling is how humans have always passed down who we are and where we belong.

Somewhere along the way, we lost that art. We swapped it for strategies, scripts and screen time.

But children's brains are still wired for story. When a child hears a story about themselves told with love, over and over, they don't just listen to it.

They start to live it.

But here's where most of us go wrong.

We talk to our children like little adults.

We explain. We reason. We tell them, "You're safe," "You're loved," "It wasn't your fault." And we wonder why it doesn't seem to land.

Your child's brain and nervous system are still growing. They don't make sense of the world through logic and explanation the way we do.

They make sense of it through play, imagination and metaphor.

Metaphor speaks to the part of your child that formed before words, in a language it understands. That's when a story stops being just a story, and starts to become part of who they are ✨

Learn the power of storytelling

On this webinar, Eleanor and Emma will show you:

  • How your child's sense of worthiness and self-esteem is formed
  • What the implicit self is, and why understanding it is so empowering as a parent
  • How story calms and organises your child's developing nervous system
  • Why story and metaphor reach where reassurance, logic, praise and explanations can't
  • How to see your child's birth as part of their story, the hard parts and the strengths
  • The first steps to telling a story that helps your child know, deep down, who they really are

Questions

My child's birth was hard. Will this just make me feel bad?

No. We aim for every family to leave our calls feeling hopeful about change, and more compassionate and understanding about what happened.

Our mantra is: it's not about what happened in the past, it's what happens now that really matters 💛

Our birth was a positive experience. Do we need this?

This isn't only about rewriting what was hard. It's about anchoring your child in the delight that they are: how wanted they were, how strong they were, how celebrated their arrival was.

It's the ultimate mindset hack. A story like this builds a positive sense of self from the very beginning. And if you've ever watched your child's eyes light up when you tell a story about them, just wait until they hear this one ✨

We adopted, or I don't know the details of my child's birth. Is this for us?

Yes. Your child's sense of self is shaped by all of their beginnings, not only the parts we have details for. You'll learn how story works with what you do know, including the story of how your child came into your family. You don't need every detail to tell a story that helps your child feel they belong 💛

My child is older. Is it too late?

Never. And it's never too early either. This is for our kids whether they're newborns, teens or adults 💕

I can't make it live. Is there a replay?

Yes. The replay comes with your ticket, so you can watch in your own time.
